Following a critical study of the Venice Charter and an attempt at revising it, the organizers of the symposium had arrived at the conclusion that the basic text of 1964 remained fully relevant to the contemporary situation and required only a few minor additons. They therefore decided that it was preferable to discuss the crucial question of the procedure to be adopted during a restoration job to ensure compliance with the Charter.
