For half a century, historic town centres around the world have enjoyed a high level of protection when included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. To date, more than 315 old town centres have been granted World Heritage status. From the banks of the Seine in Paris to the caravan cities of Mauritania, from Old Montreal to the colonial district of Hanoi or the Kasbah of Algiers, this memorial heritage bears precious witness to the cultural identity of cities and peoples over the centuries. It also plays a major role in the life of metropolises by helping to shape their contemporary image and strengthen their attractiveness. But there are many threats to these old centres. From ignorance of the heritage value of a site, to the destruction caused by wars and uncontrolled urbanisation, we can now add climate change, mass tourism and property speculation. To face these challenges, the protection of sites has constantly adapted: a strictly conservative approach to heritage has been replaced by a global vision that considers old centres in relation to the city and in their landscape. All over the world, heritage professionals gathered within ICOMOS manage these long-term projects with as much patience as creativity in order to adapt to each local situation and to imagine a protection framework adapted to the situation. Depuis un demi-siècle, les centres historiques dans le monde bénéficient d’une protection exigeante renforcée lorsqu’ils sont inscrits sur la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. À ce jour, plus de 315 centres anciens jouissent du statut de patrimoine de l'Humanité. Des rives de Seine à Paris aux cités caravanières de Mauritanie, du vieux Montréal au quartier colonial de Hanoi ou à la casbah d’Alger, ce patrimoine mémoriel livre un précieux témoignage de l’identité culturelle des villes et des peuples à travers les siècles. Il joue aussi un rôle majeur dans la vie des métropoles en contribuant à façonner leur image contemporaine et renforcer leur attractivité. Mais les menaces qui planent sur ces centres anciens sont nombreuses. De la méconnaissance de la valeur patrimoniale d’un site, aux destructions provoquées par les guerres et l’urbanisation incontrôlée, s’ajoutent désormais le péril climatique, le tourisme de masse et la spéculation immobilière. Pour y faire face, la protection des sites n’a cessé de s’adapter : à une approche strictement conservatrice du patrimoine, a succédé une vision globale qui considère les centres anciens par rapport à la ville et dans leur paysage. Dans le monde entier, les professionnels du patrimoine réunis au sein de l’ICOMOS gèrent ces chantiers au long cours avec autant de patience que de créativité pour s’adapter à chaque situation locale et imaginer un cadre de protection sur mesure.
