Since times long gone, waterwheels – or to give them their Chilean name “azudas” – have been objects of ingenious human creation. As artifacts, they provide a clear example of the nature of this type “water culture” on display through the understanding that they establish a relation between water and its corresponding rural passage. It should be no surprise then that both the irrigation community and the tourists that visit the zones in which the waterwheels are located havediscovered the value of these objects with regard to heritage and the landscape itself. A group of waterwheels situated in the village of Larmahue, in the heart of the sixth region’s countryside has obtained a nomination of Historic Monument from the Council of National Monuments. Beyond the physical attributes – the height of traditional handicraft – the waterwheels are depositors of an immaterial load of little depth: they are a representation of their own cultural landscape that one identifies with life as part of a community, and the most unblemished manifestation of a location that continues to sustain itself economically in agriculture. Bear in mind that, on dry land, with varying altitudes to overcome, irrigation would only be possible via a mechanical system. However, in Larmahue they have
opted for natural energy. Tthere, it is the torrent of theAlmahue Canal that allows the turn of the waterwheels and with them the capture, conduction, and distribution of the water to the even the highest, most distant plots. Their importance and appeal transcend the local scenery: The waterwheels have become part of the local landscape and the municipal heraldry, as well as the local arts and literary communities.

Desde tiempos muy remotos, las ruedas de agua –o azudas- han sido objeto de ingeniosas creaciones humanas. Como artefactos, constituyen un ejemplo claro de la materialidad de este tipo de expresión de la Cultura del Agua, en el entendido que se establece una relación entre el agua y su correspondiente paisaje rural. No debe sorprender que tanto las comunidades de regantes como los turistas que visitan los lugares en que se localizan las azudas hayan descubierto los valores paisajísticos y patrimoniales de estos objetos. Un grupo de ruedas de agua situadas en el poblado de Larmahue, en el corazón campesino de la Sexta Región, ha conseguido, en efecto, la nominación de Monumento Histórico por parte del Consejo de Monumentos Nacionales. Más allá de sus atributos físicos –la destreza artesanal en su expresión máxima- las ruedas de agua son depositarias de una carga inmaterial de hondo alcance: son representan un paisaje cultural propio y se identifican con la forma de vida de una comunidad y la manifestación más acendrada de una localidad que se sigue sosteniendo económicamente en la agricultura. Téngase en cuenta que, en tierras de secano, con diferencias de altura difíciles de superar, el regadío sólo sería posible mediante sistemas mecánicos. Pero en Larmahue se ha optado por la energía natural: allí, la escorrentía del Canal Almahue es la que permite el giro de las azudas y, con ello, la captura, conducción y distribución de las aguas hasta los plantíos más altos y distantes. Su importancia y gravitación trasciende el escenario local: las azudas ya se han incorporado al paisaje local y también a la heráldica municipal, a las artes plásticas a y la literatura comunal.
