(ENG and FRE versions available)Proceedings of the First International Symposium on the Conservation of Mosaics held from 2 to 5 November 1977 at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and the Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), Rome, Italy.
In almost every country that was formerly part of theancient Roman world, wall or pavement mosaics are often poorly maintained after their discovery. This leads to the rapid disappearance of unique parts of our patrimony.
Awareness of this problem ia necessary at all levels: on the technical level so that conservators share their experiences and criticize and improve, if necessary,older methods and techniques; among archaeologists so that they recognize thata newly discovered mosaic is a mosaic in danger and that their duty toward it does not end with scholarlystudy and publication. Conservation is surely one of the archaeologist's duties. Though it may be difficult,it is no less imperative; among administrators who must understand the importanceof this patrimony, be interested in it, and budget adequately for its conservation; on the public level so that specialists responsible for conservation receive support from both groupsand individuals. It is the public, after all, that benefits and is served by the world-wide conservation movement.

Actes du premier colloque international sur la conservation des mosaïques qui s'est tenu du 2 au 5 novembre 1977 à l'ICCROM, Rome, Italie.Dans presque tous les pays de l'ancien monde romain, les mosaïques murales ou de pavement sont bien souvent peu ou mal entretenues après leur découverte. Ceci amène rapidement disparition de documents parfois uniques.Une prise de conscience de ce problème est nécessaire à tous les niveaux: au niveau des techniciens afin qu'ils mettent en commun leurs expériences pour critiquer, si nécessaire, les méthodes anciennes et orienter les chercheurs pour améliorer les techniques ; au niveau des archéologues afin qu'ils reconnaissent qu'une mosaïque découverte est une mosaïque en danger et que leur devoir ne s'arrête pas à une étude scientifique et à la publication. La conservation est en effet une des tâches, pénible certes, mais impérative pour un archéologue : au niveau des responsable administratifs afin qu'ils comprennent l'importance du patrimoine, qu'ils y portent intérêt et qu'ils inscrivent les budgets nécessaires pour sa conservation ; au niveau du public afin que par des actions isolées ou groupées il aide les spécialistes chargés de la conservation.
