What remains as memory when an industrial building is no longer in service, has lost its identity and leaves neither workers, nor skills nor machines, nor tools, nor manufactured products remaining? That is the question. The current trend towards work dematerialization has led to the closure of hundreds of factories, yet there is growing interest in this heritage, even though it recalls a history of hard labour and difficult social relations. How can we convey the history of science and technology, the role of entrepreneurs and the significance of these buildings without distorting their meaning or glossing over certain aspects, so that progress made is not lost on present and future generations?

La question est posée. Que reste-t-il comme mémoire lorsqu'un bâtiment industriel ne sert plus, qu'il a perdu son identité et qu'il n'y a plus ni ouvriers, ni savoir-faire,ni machines, ni outils, ni produits fabriqués ? La tendance actuelle de dématérialisation du travail a désertifié des centaines d'usines et pourtant un intérêt croissant pour ce patrimoine existe, même s'il rappelle une histoire de labeur pénible et de rapports sociaux difficiles. Comment savoir évoquer, sans en déformer le sens ou gommer certains aspects, l'histoire des sciences et des techniques, le rôle des entrepreneurs et la signification des constructions afin que ne se perde pas pour les générations présentes et futures le progrès accompli ?
