This paper discusses the relationships between people and ruins of the past. Based on two examples from Brazil – the Historic Center of Salvador and small villages in the Amazon Region – I reflect about the impact of the restoration projects on people’s daily life. I conclude that restoration and/or reconstructions are not always desirable.
