The following article presents the evolution and conservation of the cultural landscape around the city of Antigua Guatemala, which still preserves much of its colonial image and urban appearance because it was abandoned in the year 1773, due to the constants earthquakes that hit the city during its colonial history. In the course of time the city was repopulated but its characteristics and socioeconomic functions are significantly different from the originals. Currently the city faces different problems derived from the abandonment period, from the emergence of political and economic interests, from the population andurban development, and from the demand and tourist affluence.
Also, the management model used to date has not been adequate due to the ineffectiveness of existing protectivelegislation and legislative gaps, all of the above has affected the conservation of the city, the cultural landscape and its relationship with the environment.

El siguiente articulo presenta la evolución y conservación del paisaje cultural entorno a la ciudad de Antigua Guatemala, la cual aun conserva mucho de su imagen y fisionomía urbana de época colonial debido a que fue abandonada en el año de 1773, a causa delos constantes sismos que azotaron la ciudad durante su historia colonial.Con el paso del tiempo la ciudad volvió a repoblarse con características y funciones socioeconómicas notablemente diferentes a las originales. Actualmente la ciudad enfrenta diferentes problemáticasderivadas de la época de abandono, de la aparición de intereses políticos y económicos, del desarrollo poblacional y urbano, y de la demanda y afluencia turística. Asimismo,el modelo de gestión utilizado hasta
la actualidad no ha sido el adecuado debido a la inoperancia de la legislación de protección existente y a los vacíos legales, todo lo anteriormente mencionado ha afectado la conservación de la ciudad, del paisaje cultural y su relación con el entorno.
