This paper will present the effectiveness, tensions and perceptions of the New Lanark World Heritage Site's Buffer Zone. This World Heritage Site was inscribed in December 2001. It is an unrivalled combination of an 18th century industrial settlement set in a dramatic landscape. The Site and its Buffer Zone's boundaries were determined by a combination of past historic associations and the visual envelope.
