Résumé en anglais
This paper provides a preliminary outline of a case study in the exploration of social attachment to the Great Barrier Reef. The case study was designed to inform a broader study on consultation processes and heritage management in relation to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park while at the same time furthering the research agenda of the CRC Reef’s cultural heritage task. The paper presents the preliminary outcomes of a workshop held at Bowen to explore the cultural attachment of people to landscapes or places within the Bowen coastal landscape and seascape. The outcomes of the Bowen case study are used to draw preliminary conclusions about how well these values are identified and protected in the current management processes. In addition the implications for current and future management of the Great Barrier Reef WHA and Marine Park are outlined.
