Résumé en anglais
Anton Claudio Galateo's debut as a civil engineer took place in 1821 with a rather spectacular operation: the restoration of the bell tower of the church of Ponso near Padua, which presented a serious static instability.
This approximately 20 m high tower consisted of two overlapping parts. The lower part of the masonry, about ten meters high, was very old and in a state close to collapse. The upper masonry, recently built, was in excellent condition.Galateo built a wooden castle, which kept the top of the tower suspended at a height of 10 meters for a few weeks. In this way, he proceeded to demolish and rebuild the lower part.
