Résumé en anglais
This study aims to investigate the dynamics of “cultural identity” within the extended meaningof “urban heritage” as an emerging phenomenon in recent decades, particularly, the increased
importance of intangible values within the scope of urban heritage and its context linked to the place orcommunity to which it belongs. In this context, the purpose of the proposed study is to explore Taksim
area in Istanbul, Turkey as a place with its powerful historic link and interpretation to political powersthroughout its history in order to understand the drivers of “cultural identity”. Taksim, with its history
going back to the Ottoman Empire is a visual archive embracing the layers of social-political-spatialtransformation of the city and the country, where the reconciliation of “cultural diversity and identity” can
be seen clearly. When the regime was changed to a Republican one, the area experienced a substantialurban renewal, which was also a call for a secular social transformation of the governing power. It can be
claimed that from the early years of the Ottoman Empire up to today, Taksim juxtaposes and combinesspatial traces as reflections of its social-political history. In addition to the trial of deciphering multilayered structure under strong political domination on urban space, it is important to understand the
generation of “cultural identity” within its historic layers. Therefore, the bilateral relation between thetransformation of the urban space, its character and understanding of political power and their domination
on the creation of “cultural identity” will be considered as the backbone of this study in order to discuss the reconciliation within its diversity. The methodology of the study is based on qualitative research
approach, and it is supported by the data collected through a deep literature review, observations, and thereview of community discussion forums.
