This paper discusses the deeply seated spirit ofbattlefields and places of conflict, the need to recognize
various cultural perspectives at such places, and the gravethreats posed to sites of high cultural value by global
energy development. Using Montana’s Rosebud andWolf Mountains Battlefields, two pristine but threatened
sites, and pending United States National HistoricLandmarks, as case studies, the authors will address the
complex challenges and strategies for preserving suchplaces.
