In the context of the ICOMOS annual meetings, the ICOMOS Advisory Committee organises its 2022 Scientific Symposium on 29 and 30 October at the Fine Arts Department (Bangkok, Thailand) on the theme “Religious Heritage: Celebrating and conserving places of religious and ritual significance in a global world and in changing climates”. Religious heritage is a living heritage which greatly impacts the way people go about their daily life. The Covid-19 pandemic in particular has brought changes to patterns of worship and the use of religious heritage places, for instance due to limits in attendance numbers at ritual ceremonies, requirements for social distancing, development of on-line worship. Nevertheless, its religious and ritual significance has not diminished for communities. Climate change and its effects – such as changing temperatures and seasonal climate patterns, floods, droughts, extreme precipitation events, unseasonal rain, snow and wind, melting glaciers – are having an impact on the conservation, protection and management of religious heritage – places of religion and ritual. Existing conservation and management plans, especially long term planning, needs to be revised. The recognition and response to these issues vary widely based on the traditions and customs of religious and/or ethnic groups.
The 2022 Scientific Symposium attempts to explore these impacts and challenges through the following sub-themes: 1. Significance of places of religion and ritual. 2. Influence of climate change on the conservation, protection and management of religious heritage. 3. Changing use and perception of places of religion and ritual following the Covid-19 pandemic. 4. Practice of pilgrimage following the Covid-19 pandemic. 5. Reuse of religious heritage places.

Dans le cadre des réunions annuelles de l’ICOMOS, le Conseil consultatif de l’ICOMOS organise son Symposium scientifique 2022 les 29 et 30 octobre au Département des Beaux-Arts (Bangkok, Thaïlande) sur le thème « Patrimoine religieux : Célébrer et conserver les lieux d’importance religieuse et rituelle dans un monde global et dans des climats changeants ». Le patrimoine religieux est un patrimoine vivant qui a un impact considérable sur la façon dont les gens mènent leur vie quotidienne. La pandémie de Covid-19, en particulier, a entraîné des changements dans les modes de culte et l’utilisation des lieux du patrimoine religieux, par exemple en raison de la limitation du nombre de participants aux cérémonies rituelles, des exigences de distanciation sociale, du développement du culte en ligne. Néanmoins, sa signification religieuse et rituelle n’a pas diminué pour les communautés.
Le changement climatique et ses effets - tels que le changement des températures et des schémas climatiques saisonniers, les inondations, les sécheresses, les précipitations extrêmes, les pluies non saisonnières, la neige et le vent, la fonte des glaciers - ont un impact sur la conservation, la protection et la gestion du patrimoine religieux - les lieux de culte et de rituel. Les plans de conservation et de gestion existants, en particulier la planification à long terme, doivent être révisés. La reconnaissance et la réponse à ces questions varient largement en fonction des traditions et des coutumes des groupes religieux et/ou ethniques.Le Symposium scientifique 2022 tente d’explorer ces impacts et défis à travers les sous-thèmes suivants : 1. Importance des lieux de religion et de rituel. 2. Influence du changement climatique sur la conservation, la protection et la gestion du patrimoine religieux. 3. Changement d’utilisation et de perception des lieux de religion et de rituel suite à la pandémie de Covid-19. 4. Pratique du pèlerinage suite à la pandémie de Covid-19. 5. Réutilisation des lieux du patrimoine religieux.
