This paper describes the defense system of Panama City from the relocation of the city, the historical importance of said defense system, its relationship with the landscape and its relationship with the urban layout of Panama City, as well as the possible relationships of continuity between the layout of the founding nucleus of Panamá Viejo and the relocated historic center, Casco Antiguo de Panamá. The importance of the port city of Panamá as terminal on the South Sea of important imperial routes part of commercial and transport networks, made imperative not only its rehabilitation to enable its continuity, but also to ensure its security by means of military defense strategies after the destruction of the center urban area of Panama City as a result of the attack by pirates led by Henry Morgan in 1671. To this end, it was ordered to move and protect the city with defensive walls, an outstanding fact within the urbanization processes in the Isthmus of Panama and the American continent.

Este trabajo describe el sistema defensivo de la Ciudad de Panamá a partir de su traslado (1673), su importancia histórica, su relación con el paisaje y su relación con el trazado urbano, así como las posibles relaciones de continuidad entre el trazado del núcleo fundacional Panamá Viejo y del centro histórico trasladado, Casco Antiguo de Panamá. La importancia de la ciudad portuaria como terminal de rutas imperiales en el Mar del Sur, parte de redes comerciales y de transporte, hizo imperativo no solo su rehabilitación para su continuidad, sino asegurar su seguridad mediante estrategias militares de defensa tras la destrucción del centro urbano de la Ciudad, a consecuencia del ataque de los piratas liderados por Henry Morgan en 1671. A este fin se ordenó trasladarla y protegerla dotándola de murallas, hecho que destaca dentro de los procesos de urbanización del Istmo de Panamá y en el continente americano.
