Résumé en anglais
The UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico held a conference on the themes of authenticity and Integrity in the cultural and natural heritage of the Americas on 24, 25 and 26 August 2005 in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, with the collaboration of international organisations such as ICOMOS, IUCN, the World Monuments Fund, the Getty Institute and the Global Heritage Fund, with the following aims. – 1. Definition of the concept of authenticity - Depending on the nature, context and historical evolution of cultural heritage, authenticity judgements can be linked to a variety of information sources: form and design, materials and substances, use and function, traditions and techniques, spirit and feeling, among other internal and external factors. The use of these sources allows for the elaboration of the specific artistic, historical, social and scientific dimensions of the cultural heritage under consideration. – 2. Presentation of various sites inscribed on the World Heritage List, involved in these issues for analysis and discussion. - For obvious reasons, one of the most controversial sites for inscription on the World Heritage List in terms of the authenticity criterion was the the city of Warsaw, destroyed by the Germans during World War II. Other controversial sites include the Buddhist monuments of Hōryū-ji and the historic monuments of ancient Nara in Japan, due to the constant maintenance of their wooden roofs. In the American context, what about controversial sites such as the temples of Chiloé (Chile), Chan Chan (Peru) or the Jesuit missions in Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, built of wood and adobe, as well as the degradation of our natural sites? – 3. Definition of permissible limits and thresholds for cultural heritage reconstruction and the degradation of natural sites.
