To celebrate the forty years of the Venice Charter for the conservation and restoration of monuments and sites, ICOMOS organized though its national committee for Hungary an international conference in Pécs on 22-27 May 2004. The proceedings of this conference, in equivalent English and French versions, include the declaration of Pécs on the Venice Charter that was adopted on the occasion, speeches, appeals and 55 articles by experts of various backgrounds (academics, administrators, archaeologists, architects, historians, restorers…) on theoretical and practical aspects of the Venice Charter, including: the meaning of the Charter, its concepts and doctrine; the social, cultural and historical context of its adoption and interpretations; technical means to implement its principles; case studies on the conservation and restorations of sites in Australia, Finland, Hungary, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Slovakia, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
