The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), with support from many partners, held the Africa24 Conference on the Conservation of Heritage in Africa in Mombasa Kenya on 25 - 29 November 2024, which brought together African experts and emerging professionals to enhance shared knowledge and better understanding of African cultural heritage and the challenges it faces. The Conference recognised that Africa is a region with a diversity of cultural properties of outstanding universal value, which merit protection, knowledge and enhancement for the benefit of present and future generations. In the current context of the evolution of our societies, including rapid urbanisation, multifaceted threats related to the impacts of human action, natural disasters, climate change and armed conflicts weigh heavily on African cultural heritage. To respond to this situation, the mobilization and support of national and international actors for the protection and sustainable management of heritage properties is more than necessary. Strengthening the network of heritage experts in the region is also vital. These Recommendations reaffirm ICOMOS’ commitment to conserving the heritage of the African region. They also call for collective action to realize the African vision of “The Africa We Want” through the “Heritage We Want”.

Le Conseil international des monuments et des sites (ICOMOS) a organisé avec le soutien de nombreux partenaires la conférence AFRICA24 à Mombasa au Kenya du 25 au 29 novembre 2024, laquelle a rassemblé des experts et des professionnels émergents africains afin d'améliorer le partage des connaissances et la compréhension du patrimoine culturel africain et des défis auxquels il est confronté. La conférence a reconnu que l'Afrique est une région dotée d'une diversité de biens culturels d'une valeur universelle exceptionnelle, qui méritent d'être protégés, connus et mis en valeur au profit des générations actuelles et futures. Dans le contexte actuel de l'évolution de nos sociétés, y compris l'urbanisation rapide, des menaces multiformes liées aux impacts de l'action humaine, aux catastrophes naturelles, au changement climatique et aux conflits armés pèsent lourdement sur le patrimoine culturel africain. Pour répondre à cette situation, la mobilisation et le soutien des acteurs nationaux et internationaux pour la protection et la gestion durable des biens patrimoniaux est plus que nécessaire. Le renforcement du réseau d'experts du patrimoine dans la région est également essentiel. Ces Recommandations réaffirment l'engagement de l'ICOMOS à conserver le patrimoine de la région africaine. Elles appellent également à une action collective pour réaliser la vision africaine de « L'Afrique que nous voulons » à travers « Le Patrimoine que nous voulons ».
